MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

Within the framework of future prospecting and planning policy in all the fields , The Ministry of Transport began the studies and the implementation of the Tunisian Airports' modernization program.
These actions have been achieved within the framework of what was defined as " Tunisian Airports' guiding plan " whose content brings out mainly the following decisions :
Creation of the International Airport of Gafsa Ksar in 1998 in order to promote regional development ;
Implementation of Tabarka Ain Draham International Airport whose opening date was 1992 ;
Development of Tunis Carthage International Airport in order to increase its capacity from 3 to 4.5 million passengers per year
Developing the check-in zone of Tunis Carthage International airport passenger terminal ;
The implementation of terminal II at Tunis Carthage Airport in 2006 with an additional capacity of 500 thousand passengers to increase the airport capacity to 5 million passengers per year ;
Reorganisation of the terminal of Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport for the purpose of providing a high service quality ;
The extension of Djerba Zarzis International Airport in order to increase its capacity from 1.5 million to 4 million passengers per year ;

Development of Tozeur Nefta International Airport for an increase of its capacity from 200 000 to 400 000 passengers per year

Building in 2007 of a new Terminal, a technical bloc, a tower control and Vip Lounge in Sfax Thyna International Airport ;
The construction works of a new Airport in the Region of Gabès (Gabès Matmata Airport) in December 22nd 2007 began.

MAIN EQUIPMENT
Acquisition and installation of a new radar system for air navigation control, with one primary radar at Tunis-Carthage International Airport and two other secondary radar in Sidi Zid and Akouda (Radar installation in Akouda is scheduled in November 2000 ) ;
Acquisition and installation of a communication system by satellites of high technology ;
Acquisition and installation of measuring and controlling equipment of sound harm caused by the aircraft along the airports ;
Equipping safety, security and rescue units with the most modern material.
AIRPORT SAFETY
Several actions have been undertaken in order to reach the optimal level of safety in Tunisian airports :
Resurfacing of the traffic roads and strengthening of security fences at the airports ;
Installation of a fixed command position to manage any possible crises at Tunisian airports ;
Acquisition of mobile command positions for Tunis Carthage, Monastir Habib Bourguiba and Djerba Zarzis airports ;
Fast intervention lorries "fire vehicles"
Replacing and renovating fire safety vehicles by enhancing SIS units through heavy and fast intervention fire lorries together with vehicles of average power ;
Elaborating an action plan entitled "Security in Tunisian Airports" including a list of actions intended to resolve problems facing airports as far as safety is concerned :
 

- Periodical excercises on real fire ;

 
- Follow-up and periodical control of fire safety installations in the OACA different buildings and airports ;
 
- Elaboration of an annual training plan for the SSI staff ;
 
- Installation of camera supervision systems for the airports ;
 
- Layout of an OPS-SOS cell at Safety and Security Direction ;
 
- Organizing a simulation exercise at the AITC in March 2004 in collaboration with the ICAO experts.
